Unless You’re Wearing A Badge My Driving Is My Own Business

That’s when it hit me, tomorrow I get my very first driver’s license. It is just a learner’s permit and I will have to an experienced driver with me but I am on my way to joining my friends in this newfound freedom. Having studied the Rules of the Road from cover to cover I might not miss even one question on the examination.

Beginning soon I will decide when and where to go for a change. There are places I have been studying where young people can go and not be disturbed. Also, being a big fan of auto racing makes me itch to jam my foot down on the accelerator and fly low to the ground. Perhaps I can buy my own vehicle and put decals and a favorite driver number on it.

Speeding on public highways isn’t legal but today it is more complex than it used to be. There are general speed restrictions and specific speed limits. Nobody can drive so slow that they hold up the normal flow of traffic. Other factors cause more crashes than speeding but death comes to visit at least eight times more often in crashes at high speed. Going a mile a minute or higher gets you there but tosses into the mix some bad probability.

New drivers are especially at risk. They haven’t acquired the skills and reflexes needed for the long haul of a lifetime of driving. A disproportionate number of accidents are caused by them. Every generation has had to bury certain of their numbers.

Having paid attention in science classes in school will keep you in touch with the forces a heavy vehicle traveling at high speed is subject to. Centrifugal force, for instance, experienced going around a curve requires the driver to enter the curve and then speed up getting out of it. This will be uncomfortable at first but then become second nature.

When you pick up a magazine written for car enthusiasts one of the first things mentioned for each model is acceleration. Much more important to the novice driver is stopping ability. “What goes up must come down” used to always be true. Much more the case is if you can’t stop it you may have had your next to last ride. The hearse is last.

Trendy folks texting and talking on the cell phone while driving not only ignores the others in their vehicles but puts what is going on out the windshield out of mind. Perhaps being preoccupied to the extent that you don’t remember passing a familiar intersection is bad. But, this recent distraction is far worse. Attempts to address this hazard are coming in the form of new laws. But, resistance to it is heavy. Best advice -don’t do it.

Regardless of the expense of the vehicle and its number of safety features there is a beloved member of a European royal family lying dead today. No question driving is at first a thrill and taste of independence which later becomes access to a conveyance for business and source of pride and evidence of success. Never forget it can kill you too.
